Nothing surprisingly, 2020 is a year of bumper for streaming. With people who were trapped at home last year, the service saw millions of new customers – Netflix attracted 16 million customers in just three months, alone. The initial part of 2021 continued the trend, but as years walking was getting closer, it seemed that growth slowed throughout the board. This shows that when restrictions on ease throughout the world, people may return to the Pre-Pandemic Norm.
But overall, 2021 is still a big year for streaming. Netflix now has 214 million global customers, and services such as Disney + and HBO max attract customers with exclusive TV shows and films. The US platform, such as Peacock, is expanded internationally and online programming is only well represented in several award shows. Exclusive titles for streaming, such as squid and wandaavision games, are part of a cultural landscape. A slow or not years, it is clear that this is how most of us watch our shows now. Here are some of the biggest stories in streaming this year.
As mentioned above, Netflix is an undeniable leader in streaming with more than 214 million customers worldwide. Of course, it faces some challenges from rivals such as Disney + and Amazon Prime, but Netflix still holds strong. Part of it is caused by the company’s strategy investing in original content that you cannot get elsewhere, like foreign matters and crowns.
And of course, there is a squid game that has no doubt this year’s number one TV program. Netflix said that around 142 million households watched Korean shows, making it new shows that were most viewed in Netflix’s history. There was also a red notification that was recently released, which became the most watched film service in the first 28 days release, with around 328.8 million hours watching in that time span. Which sustained a previous record held by Bird Box, which has 282 million hours watching again in 2018.

However, 2021 was not without hiccup. So far the biggest is when Netflix employees protested for CEO comments that defended the Special Dave Chappelle holder, which was very criticized for the transphority content. Disney +, on the other hand, currently has 118.1 million paid customers throughout the world, which is not enough compared to Netflix. But the service still increased in 2021, with around 43 million more customers than last year. 2021 is when Marvel Cinematic Universe released four different TV shows, all exclusively at Disney +: Wandaavision, Falcon and winter soldier, Loki and Hawkeye. This is a big problem, because Marvel said that this TV series is the key to the “phase four” MCU chapter, indicating that fans will likely want to watch them to understand the context behind the upcoming film in the upcoming universe.
