Streamlabs is not the only company that draws flares from the Open Broadcasting Software (OBS) project. According to the protocol, Ben Torell’s business development manager claims to have a “clear evidence” Tiktok violates the open source GNU General Public License (aka GPL) with the newly released live studio software. The Windows Livestreaming application allegedly used the code from the Studio OBS and other open efforts, but Tiktok did not share the code with the provisions of the GPL.
Live studio is intended to offer features and quality that you usually get from Livestreaming services such as Twitch, such as catching games and overlays. It is only available for a small number of users in several Western markets, Tiktok told TechCrunch, but it was not a problem in this license dispute.
We have asked for Tiktok comments. However, this does not have to lead to the lawsuit. Torell emphasized the OBS project responded to GPL violations “in good faith” and would gladly work with Tiktok as long as it respects the license. With that, Tiktok said did not respond to the concern of OBS at the time of this writing – the dispute was not over.
