Tascam knows some pine musicians for the quality of ‘warm’ tapes’ recordings, and it is willing to effectively revive the dead technology to meet their needs. The company has introduced 424 studio Master High Bias Type II Cassette designed for Portastudio Portastudio Four-Track Cassette Recorders aged decades. Artists can record analog samples and songs without hunting rare cassettes and fretting on relegation.
Cassette is not a perfect partner. Tascam says it uses the existing magnetic oxide to produce a ribbon that is as close as “possible” to Portastudios material which is intended to be used, but the recorder owner may still have to do some “smooth adjustment” to adjust the 2021 era caset.
However, this is not just appeal to nostalgia – to a certain extent, this is about the recording preservation of analog cassette. Cassette production has suffered a lack of oxide since 2019, many years after revival (still sustainable). Tascam notes that now a single company makes type II high bias cassettes. Even though there are tapes that are already on the market, they are good and expensive.
Availability is only registered as “soon.” TasCam tapes also will not satisfy the creators who want a truly new recorder to replace the supply of old hardware that shrinks. This is probably the next best thing, and can relieve Portasudio fans who don’t want to make a complete leap into the digital realm.
